CTC Examination: A New Option for Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colorectal cancer is a treatable disease with early detection. However, since it often progresses without any noticeable symptoms, regular screening is crucial.
Common risk factors for colorectal cancer include a family history of the disease, a diet high in red meat and low in vegetables and fruits, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, and heavy alcohol consumption. Regular check-ups are recommended for individuals with these risk factors or those over 40 years old.
While traditional colorectal cancer screenings include fecal occult blood tests and colonoscopy, "CT Colonography (CTC)" has been gaining attention recently. This is a state-of-the-art examination that uses a CT scan to create 3D images of the colon after it has been inflated with carbon dioxide, without inserting an endoscope. Compared to a colonoscopy, it is less physically invasive and does not require sedation. Another advantage is its ability to easily detect lesions on the backside of the colon's folds, which are often missed during a colonoscopy. However, it can be difficult to detect small polyps under 5mm or flat lesions, and it is not possible to collect tissue samples or remove polyps during the procedure.

A group company of Create Medic Co., Ltd., Kyushu Create Medic Co., Ltd., handles CT Colonography.
It is actively adopted in European countries such as Germany, the UK, and France, driven by the emphasis on preventive medicine and early cancer detection, as well as an aging population. In the United States, motivations for its introduction include the desire to offer it as an alternative screening option for elderly or frail patients and those for whom a colonoscopy was unsuccessful, long waiting times for colonoscopies, and promising research results on CT colonography.
