The technique of decompressing dilated intestine using an ileus tube has been employed in clinical practice in Japan for over 20 years. In particular, for obstructive colorectal cancer accompanied by bowel obstruction, transanal decompression using an ileus tube not only alleviates the patient’s severe symptoms, but also allows for the avoidance of emergency surgery, including the creation of a stoma.

By gaining time through decompression, it becomes possible to improve the patient’s overall condition, conduct thorough preoperative evaluations, and schedule an elective surgery. This approach is reported to lead to better outcomes for patients with obstructive colorectal cancer.

However, in many countries overseas—including those in Southeast Asia—this technique remains relatively unknown. The ileus tube is a valuable medical device that has the potential to save many patients’ lives.
